How Much Is Enough?

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

Continuing on with the topic of money… I find it a bit of a challenge, but not too difficult to help others see how more of a financial abundance will make their lives more comfortable. One of the questions that often comes up in conversations about money and my goals regarding money, is “how much is enough?”. While I have set amounts for certain stages of my life, ultimately my answer is ‘the more, the merrier’. Now I’ll be honest here – I do not win people over to my side with that comment. You may be put off by that comment as well, so in this post I want to briefly explain the logic behind my reasoning.

Many of you realize that it takes money to do stuff – well, most stuff. I want to make it clear that I do not want to have a whole bunch of cash just for the sake of having it. I do want to have a whole bunch of cash in order to do things with it. Sure, having nice things and doing fun things, like travel, are part of the deal and will benefit mainly me and those who I travel with, as well as the people and businesses who will be on the receiving end of the transaction. However there are a lot of ideas and causes that I would like to support and be involved in, and it takes money to do that.

We can be frustrated with how the major automakers are ignoring the electric technology until the cows come home. But a few ambitious people took matters into their own hands, pulled some cash together, and started Tesla Motors. These are the types of things I am planning to be involved in. Will they make more money than they invested? I sure hope and expect that they will! Why shouldn’t they? They are providing an excellent product that benefits the world! Sounds to me like they HAVE to be compensated for their efforts. I also plan to do things like Doug Tompkins who is one of the founders of The North Face and ESPRIT. He took his fortune and bought acres upon acres of forest in Chile and with the vision of donating it back to the people as a protected national park.

So the more capital I have at my disposal, the more great things I will be a part of. And I think that is a worthy goal.

Another thing to consider are the answer to the questions, “how much love is enough?”, or “how much knowledge is enough?”, or “how much peace is enough?”. With all of these we do not put some arbitrary cap on it, so why do so with money?

I encourage you to think about the things that you would do with more capital and then start thinking in the direction of creating more of that capital!

Until next time,

Is Making A Lot Of Money A Sin?

Monday, December 21st, 2009

As I mentioned last Thursday, this week is dedicated to the topic of money. I wanted to start off by addressing a concept that many people have engraved in their minds about how it is sinful to have money, especially A LOT of money! Usually 5 minutes do not pass before the person I am talking to brings up ‘the money is the root of all evil’ line from the Bible. I do not use the Bible as a reference book for my life, but I do know enough to suggest that the person go and re-read their Bible. The actual line is that ‘the love of money is the root of all evil’, while ‘the money is the root of all evil’ crap is something someone made up, in my opinion, to suppress ambition and to keep people in line. Do you notice the difference between the two?

Money is simply a tool that facilitates the exchange of value between people. It is not mean to make you happy, though it can make you comfortable. So in the words of Bob Proctor, if money does not make a difference in whether you are happy or not, might as well have it, so that if you are miserable, at least you can be miserable in comfort.:o)

So, if money is the exchange of VALUE, it must mean that you have to offer VALUE in order to receive money. So the more money you have, the more value you must have provided! And this makes me want to ask you the following question, “Is being poor as sin?”, since it means you have not provided a lot of value! Now if the things I have said before did not ruffle your feathers, that one must have pushed you over the top!

Now you may say that you are volunteering and obviously providing value, but are not getting money in return. While that is a valid point on the surface, it is flawed because value does not have to come from the very same source. Maybe you are getting a lot of perks and other benefits, which can also be considered as VALUE. Or maybe your volunteering experience puts you in a position to get a job with a much better pay than you may have had otherwise, so that money comes from a different area. You may also bring up an example of a drug dealer who makes a lot of money but destroys lives of his or her customers. Again, you are forgetting a simple fact that the drug dealer is providing VALUE to drug users. Yes, drugs are bad for us, but so are many things, the only difference being their legal status and the speed with which they destroy us.

I hope that this will help you look at money a little differently. Your thoughts?

Using Spiritual Tools For Financial Gain

Thursday, December 17th, 2009

There seems to be a lot of stigma associated with using spiritual tools and practices for financial gain. Very often I meet people who view the idea of having money, especially an abundance of money, as a very negative thing. And the funny thing is, these very same people seem to bitch and complain about not having enough money to get the house or the car they want, go on vacation, or invest into their future.

These spiritual people have no problem justifying loving relationships, a great connection with their spiritual side, learning and expansion, and many other things, but as soon as it comes to money, the guillotine drops. Suddenly this is an evil misuse of spiritual tools. This is madness! This is insanity!

Money is a tool that facilitates exchange of value. That is it! It can be used for good things or it can be used for bad things – it all depends on the user of this tool. Much like if you have a garage full of construction tools, you can use them to build a house or to destroy one. The tool itself is innocent and has no say in how it is used.

I have just decided that I will spend the next week writing about the subject of money, so tune in! Tomorrow is the time for another awesome Spiritual Mind Treatment.
