Real and Ideal

You can also think of this as West and East or Form and Spirituality. We are living in a world largely divided between the two aspects of reality. The division is quite real – we can see it in people’s lives and literally draw a line through the world that will divide it in two camps based on thought patterns and physical manifestations. It is only the very few, very aware individuals, who talk about the power coming from the unity of the two ideals. Even though I know that there are many more, I have heard only a handful of people talk about this in depth.

Think of ‘West’ as, well, the West. It is made up of the developed nations and is all about manifesting form and creating abundance and prosperity. The United States is THE country that comes to mind when I think of the ‘West’. There are no other countries who learned how to manufacture wealth as well as the United States does. And although people living in the ‘West’ have a lot of stuff, they are largely unfulfilled. Even though they have pretty much all the things that they desire, they feel empty inside and are ultimately not happy with their lives. You may be different – in fact you probably are different if you are reading this – but this is based on my own observations of the society that I live in.

On the other side we have the ‘East’. These are very ‘old’ and wise countries with thousands of years of active history and development. Their wisdom, I think, is what led them to see and feel the truth of our being. Many people in this part of the world meditate and are very spiritual, however they lack stuff. Sure, they may know the truth, but they are living rather difficult lives (in my opinion, anyway). This is currently changing, much the like the ‘West’ is becoming more spiritual, but a typical image of the ‘East’ is people sitting on top of a mountain in a lotus posture, wrapped in a sheet of fabric, and meditating for hours.

Kenn Gordon spoke on the integration of the two philosophies a little while back and I found the idea quite fascinating. It was not the first time that I heard it, though it was presented in a slightly different way. He said that the goal is to be integrated in both, ‘real’ and ‘ideal’ – have the the ’stuff’ and be ’spiritual’. This is what I have been working on over the last year or so, and I do not think that I am anywhere near the end of the road, since this very well may be a road with no end. But I will say that I feel a lot more at peace with myself now than when I started to walk down this road.

Until next time,
